Greg Fergus has faced massive scrutiny over his impartiality and the deplorable conduct that he has demonstrated in his role as Speaker. Far too much influence is given to him, as the first Black Speaker, but it is clear, by the recent ejections of Conservative MPs, that he is undermining the integrity of the Office of Speaker. He controls the oversight in question period, and allows the Prime Minister to avoid transparency and has obstructed the Conservatives to probe the Liberals appropriately. Below, are the reasons why Fergus should step down, as party loyalty is eroding Canadian democracy.
1) Compromised Impartiality
The Speaker's role is simply to remain party and ideologically neutral, while upholding parliamentary decorum. There is no doubt, that Fergus is allied with the Liberal party, and has continuously showed blatant bias in all his rulings and interactions in parliament. It's clear, that his bias is undermining trust in the office and Canadians are seeing this routinely. It's very obvious that Fergus is determined to silence the Conservatives as much as possible, while allowing Trudeau to favor political loyalty over true accountability.
2) Allegations of Gross Misconduct
Many reports have surfaced regarding Fergus's egregious breaches of parliamentary ethics. These include a demonstration, which has been well documented, to blatantly show conflicts of interest and favoritism towards the Liberals.. This of course, is confirmed by Trudeau's unwillingness to demand accountability from key Liberal members. There is no doubt that Trudeau, along with the Speaker's attempts to bolster this government, that the Prime Minister prioritizes loyalty over the long promised transparency fallacy that has been promised for nearly a decade.
3) Loss of Confidence in Fergus
A large portion of MPs have expressed significant dissatisfaction with Fergus's conduct as Speaker. The main issue is, that Trudeau's focus on insulating core Liberal party members has solidified Fergus's position. This is despite the concerns of MPs and Canadian citizens, and it's not limited to the opposite side of the aisle. There are also MPs within Trudeau's own party who are unhappy with the government and are displeased with the conduct in parliament.
4) A Serious Erosion of Public Trust
The Speaker represents a cornerstone of Canadian democracy. The public have seen question periods and the expulsion of Conservative MPs have brought into question the impartiality and fairness, which are critical to maintaining public trust in the system. Trudeau is perceived, and rightly so, as a leader who prioritizes party loyalty over the much touted transparency that the Liberals have promised. Citizens are waking up, and realizing that it's not just Fergus, he is simply indicative of a much deeper problem regarding impartiality in Canadian politics.
5) Distraction from Legislative Priorities
The ongoing focus on Fergus's conduct is detracting from the true issues facing Canada. People want answers, and question period is the opportunity for the opposition to address the government in order to answer pressing concerns in Canada. However, it's become clear that Trudeau's constant battle to shield his allies, Fergus most certainly included, is detracting from parliament's ability to function fairly. The clear prioritization of party over country has diminished the government's true purpose, which is to address national concerns effectively.
In conclusion, it has been demonstrated that Fergus is biased, partial, and has a vested interest in keeping the Liberals in power. It's evident that he is not suitable for this role, due to his obvious allegiance, ideologically and personally, to the Liberal party. There is little doubt that Fergus must step down in order to preserve the integrity of the Office and allow parliament to function fairly, and without prejudice. His resignation is the only course of action that can start the healing process in Canada and to regain the confidence of parliament and, more importantly, the citizens of this once nation.
