Why Nationalism is not Nazism

There is a prevailing sentiment, especially since the election of President Trump, that nationalism is inherently evil.  This is not the case however, as there are vast differences between national socialism and a healthy nationalistic society.

1) Patriotism and National Identity

Nationalism: :Often fosters pride and unity by encouraging citizens to take pride in their country's culture, values, and history.  This can unify people within a nation and cultivate shared values.

National Socialism: Also promotes national identity but does so by elevating one racial or ethnic identity over others, leading to exclusionary and oppressive policies.

2) Political Sovereignty 

Nationalism: Emphasizes self-governance and independence from external control, often encouraging countries to prioritize the well-being of their citizens and resist foreign interference.

National Socialism: While promoting a form of sovereignty, it seeks aggressive expansion and control over other nations, often leading to militarism and imperialism.

3) Cultural Preservation vs Cultural Domination

Nationalism: Generally seeks to protect and preserve the traditions, languages, and heritage of a nation, fostering cultural pride without infringing upon other cultures.

National Socialism: Enforces cultural dominance, often viewing other cultures as inferior and actively seeking to suppress or eliminate them.

4) Social Cohesion and Inclusion

Nationalism: Can promote inclusivity within the nation, encouraging citizens of various backgrounds to unite under a shared identity while maintaining their own respective customs and traditions.

National Socialism: Promotes social cohesion only within a racially "pure" framework, leading to discrimination and persecution of minority groups.

5) Economic Self-Sufficiency

Nationalism: Nationalism supports economic policies that prioritize local industries and self-reliance, aiming to strengthen national economies in a way that benefits all citizens.

National Socialism: also aims for self-sufficiency but combines it with a racial hierarchy, forced labor, and exploitation of conquered nations.

6) Pride vs Supremacy

Nationalism: focuses on healthy pride in one's nation, which can lead to constructive international relationships and mutual respect among countries.

National Socialism: Equates national pride with racial supremacy, which fosters hostility, prejudice, and aggressive expansion at the extent of others.

In conclusion, nationalism, in its more inclusive form, promotes unity, pride, and sovereignty within a framework that respects diversity.  Conversely, national socialism embeds exclusionary and supremacist ideals, leading to conflict and oppression.  Nationalism can be compatible with democratic principles, while national socialism inherently leads to authoritarianism and discrimination.

So before you panic, hearing negative punditry surrounding President Trump's "evil nationalist agenda", do your research and most importantly, do not equate healthy nationalism with national socialism as that only serves to fuel fear and divisiveness within society.
